Leadville’s Rich History
A passing glance at the buildings on Harrison Avenue lets you know that this town’s got some stories to tell! Original inhabitants first struck it rich with gold, silver, and other precious gems and minerals before settling on the name Leadville. Later on, molybdenum was discovered and is still mined at Climax today. In addition to mining, the tourism industry is bustling here these days. No matter what brought you here, you’ll love learning about the fascinating people and events that made Leadville what it is today.
Museums, Tours, and More
You can purchase a Museum Passport at the Chamber of Commerce or Mining Hall of Fame and go exploring! The passport is valid from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and is good for entry at all of these wonderfully historic places: Healy House and Dexter Cabin; Heritage Museum; National Mining Hall of Fame and Matchless Mine; House with the Eye; Temple Israel; Tabor Home; and Tabor Opera House. In addition to the backstage tour, the Opera House offers a full summer season of concerts, shows, and special events. The Museum Passport also gives you discounts on Interlaken Boat Tours at Twin Lakes.
While you’re here, be sure to hop on the Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad for a tour of some of the most beautiful scenery that the Rockies have to offer. Daily trips are available from May to October with clever, informative narration from your conductor. Special trips also occur throughout the season, such as BBQ dinners and wildflower hikes.
